| Outstanding Researcher of Thammasat University |
Associate Professor Dr. Somnuk Tangtermsirikul from the Civil Engineering Program of the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) received the 1998 Award for Outstanding Researcher in the field of Science and Technology from Thammasat University. Dr. Somnuk obtained his D.Eng. Degree from the University of Tokyo in 1989. After that he worked as a researcher at the Technology Research Center of Taisei Corporation in Japan and then joined SIIT in 1992. Since joining SIIT, he has published more than 30 international journal and conference papers and more than 20 national journal and conference papers based on his research works. Two of his papers received awards from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 1993 and 1999. He has been actively participating in various professional committees on concrete materials at both national and international levels. His current research interests include performance-based analysis and design of concrete, durability of concrete, use of waste and recycled materials in concrete, minimizing uses of natural resources and energy in cement and concrete industries, reducing emission from cement industry, etc.
1998 Best Teaching Award for SIIT Faculty Member SIIT presented the 1998 Best Teaching Award for SIIT faculty member to Asst. Prof. Dr. Winyu Rattanapitikon of the Civil Engineering Program. The award was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Naris Chaiyasoot, the Rector of Thammasat University and the Chairman of the SIIT Board of Trustees on August 24, 1999 at the 4th/1999 Board of Trustees Meeting. Dr. Winyu attained his D.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the Yokohama National University, Yokohama, Japan. He taught civil engineering courses at various universities for a number of years prior to joining SIIT in October 1997. His main research areas include mathematical modeling, coastal engineering, hydraulics of open channel, and hydrology. |
SIIT Team Won Creative Award of Programming & Robotic Control Competition On 26 June 1999, an SIIT team comprised of 3 students of the Mechanical Engineering Program - Mr. Apirak Hokpunna, Mr. Jeerasak Pitakarnnop, and Mr. Apiphan Puttacharoen - won the Creative Award of the "Programming & Robotic Control Competition". Thirteen teams from various universities and high schools participated in this competition. The three awards presented were: the Winning Award of 100,000 baht, the Best Technical Award of 70,000 baht, and the Creative Award of 50,000 baht. |

Team Won Third Prize
for Developing Computer-Game Software from the First National Computer Software Development Contest |
On 16 July 1999, a team of 3 fourth-year students of the Information Technology Program won the third prize from the First National Computer Software Development Contest for developing computer-game software. The contest was organized by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC). In the computer game category, more than 20 teams joined the contest and about half of them passed the qualification round. The SIIT team comprises Ms. Wirat Chinnan, Mr. Thanasan Tanhermhong, and Mr. Warin Wattanapornprom and the team advisor is Asst. Prof. Dr. Ekawit Nantajeewarawat of the Information Technology Program. The team was awarded 20,000 baht for their software, the "Idea War", and additional project support of 18,000-baht from NECTEC. |
| SIIT Graduates Receive Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarships |
The Monbusho (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Government of Japan) annually offers scholarships to Thai students to study at Japanese universities under the Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarship Program since 1954. For the year 2000, scholarships will be offered to 5 undergraduate students and 60 research students.
Since 1996, 17graduates of SIIT have received the Monbusho scholarships
to study in graduate engineering programs at leading universities in Japan.
The Institute is very proud of the outstanding academic performance of
these SIIT graduates.

| MUA Doctoral Degrees Fair |
Bangkok, 21 September 1999 - the Ministry of University Affairs (MUA) hosted a fair for MUA scholarship recipients to meet faculty members from graduate programs of Thai Universities. Under this program, scholarship recipients are obligated to serve as faculty members in various Thai universities. There were 25 Ph.D. programs in several shortage areas, such as engineering and science and technology, participating in this fair. SIIT Ph.D. program is one of these programs which have been approved by the MUA to accept the scholarship recipients.

Economic Cooperation Society Mr. Jiro Aiko, the President of Japan-Thailand Economic Cooperation Society in Tokyo, Japan, led his team to visit SIIT on 5 July 1999. They were welcomed by Professor Dr. Sawasd Tantaratana, the Deputy Director of SIIT, and Associate Professor Dr. Taweep Chaisompob, the Assistant Director for Student and Special Affairs, who informed them of the SIIT academic programs, research activities, and management and operations. |
